Alexandria from Cairo: day trip or overnight?
A day trip can work when you choose one clear priority. Stay overnight when you want Alexandria’s waterfront, library and historic sites to feel like a visit rather than a checklist.

The useful question is not whether Alexandria can be reached from Cairo in a day; it is what you want to do once you arrive. If one or two places are the whole reason for going, a day trip may suit. If you want to explore the city’s different histories and still leave time for the sea, an overnight stay gives the plan more breathing room.
When a day trip makes sense
Choose a day trip when you have a short list: perhaps the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and a waterfront pause, or Qaitbay Citadel with one nearby historic stop. Agree on the two main visits before departure and treat anything else as optional. This keeps the day useful even if traffic, queues or opening hours change the order.
When to stay overnight
An overnight is the better fit if you want both the waterfront and several cultural or archaeological visits, or if you prefer not to race back to Cairo at the end of the day. Use the arrival afternoon for one area, then keep the following morning for a second priority. One night is enough to change the pace; add another only if your interests and wider route justify it.
Decide how you will travel before choosing the schedule
For the train, check the current Egypt National Railways booking and timetable information for your exact date, and include the station transfers at both ends. A private car gives you more control over stops, but the driver should plan the return around real traffic conditions rather than a map estimate. Either way, build a generous buffer before a fixed departure or timed visit.
Keep the map honest
Qaitbay, the Bibliotheca and Alexandria’s other historic sites do not form one compact indoor attraction. Put your chosen stops on a map, group them by area, and confirm which entrances and opening times apply on your date. The Bibliotheca includes visitor information for its library and cultural venues; check the page for the specific part you want to see.
Two practical day shapes
For a day trip, make one visit the anchor, have lunch near your second stop, and keep a return buffer. For an overnight, split the main visits across two shorter blocks and leave one unscheduled stretch for the corniche or a relaxed meal. In both cases, verify closures and ticket arrangements directly with each venue before you leave Cairo.
