Abu Simbel
Four colossal seated pharaohs facing the sunrise — carved, moved, and unforgettable.
Abu Simbel is a pilgrimage. The great temple, cut from a single sandstone cliff by Ramses II, was rescued from the rising waters of Lake Nasser in the 1960s and re-set, piece by piece, on higher ground.
We plan around the earlier official visiting window where feasible, and keep the morning unhurried. Visitor numbers vary at every site and no crowd-avoidance can be promised.
What we would not let you miss.
- N° 01Arrival planned around the earlier official visiting window where feasible (visitor numbers vary)
- N° 02The smaller temple of Nefertari — one of only two in ancient Egypt dedicated to a queen
- N° 03Overnight at a small lodge on the lake
- N° 04The sun festival on 22 February and 22 October, when light reaches the inner sanctuary (advance reservation strongly recommended)
- N° 05A quieter afternoon return visit, where schedules allow
Abu Simbel, seen closer.

The calendar, honestly.
Peak months are what most guidebooks recommend. Shoulder months are our favourites — warmer light, thinner crowds, and better rates. Warm months are possible but demand a slower pace.
Three moments we might build for you.
Early morning
We plan your arrival around the earlier official visiting window where feasible, aiming for an unhurried guided visit of around ninety minutes. Visitor numbers vary throughout the day and no crowd-avoidance is guaranteed.
The lake at dusk
Overnight at a small lakeside lodge. Sunset from the water and the temples floodlit into the evening.
The sun festival
Twice a year, the rising sun reaches the innermost sanctuary. Dates are 22 Feb and 22 Oct; reservations are held months ahead.
The quiet details.
- How to go
- Fly-in for a day is efficient. Overnight is transformational.
- Arrival timing
- Day-trip coaches typically arrive on set schedules; planning around the earlier official window can help, though visitor levels vary and cannot be guaranteed.
- Photography
- Interior photography is restricted; your guide will advise on the current rules.
