Luxor
The world's greatest open-air museum

Luxor

Ancient Thebes — where the pharaohs built for eternity and, largely, succeeded.

An overview

Luxor is the reason many travelers come to Egypt at all. Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's terraces, the Ramesseum — each of these alone would define a country's tourism.

The city holds them all inside forty minutes' drive. Two full days is a minimum; three is generous; four rewards the truly interested.

The essentials

What we would not let you miss.

  • N° 01The Valley of the Kings visited at official opening
  • N° 02Karnak Temple in the quieter late-afternoon light
  • N° 03The Tombs of the Nobles — quieter, exquisite, and uncrowded
  • N° 04Sunrise hot-air balloon over the West Bank (weather permitting)
  • N° 05Privately-guided dinners can be arranged in considered Luxor settings, subject to venue and supplier confirmation and availability

When to go

The calendar, honestly.

Peak months are what most guidebooks recommend. Shoulder months are our favourites — warmer light, thinner crowds, and better rates. Warm months are possible but demand a slower pace.

Sample experiences

Three moments we might build for you.

N° 01

Karnak, quietly

A visit timed for the golden, late-afternoon light, when the hypostyle hall feels calmer — always subject to the site's current opening arrangements and visitor flow. An Egyptologist guide can be requested where suited to the route, subject to availability and confirmed in your personalised proposal.

N° 02

The Valley of the Kings

Early entry at official opening, three carefully chosen tombs, and additional tombs such as Nefertari's requested subject to permits and quotas.

N° 03

Balloon at dawn

A hot-air balloon lifting from the West Bank as the sun rises over the Theban hills (subject to weather and operator availability).

Practical notes

The quiet details.

West Bank versus East
Temples on the east, tombs on the west. Plan half-days on each; do not try to combine them.
Heat
Summer temperatures exceed 40°C. October–April is far kinder.
Photography in tombs
Requires a paid photo ticket per tomb; your guide will arrange.
