Fayoum
Ninety minutes from Cairo — a bowl of green farmland, a great salt lake, and the world's oldest paved road.
Fayoum is Egypt's overlooked interior: a fertile depression fed by a Nile branch, ringed by desert, and home to Wadi El Rayan's waterfalls, the fossil valley of Wadi El Hitan, and pottery villages that have made the same bowls for four hundred years.
We recommend Fayoum as a two-night pause — a soft landing after Cairo, or a soft close before flying home.
What we would not let you miss.
- N° 01Wadi El Rayan's twin lakes and waterfalls
- N° 02Wadi El Hitan — the UNESCO fossil valley of the whales
- N° 03Tunis village, and its potters
- N° 04Lake Qarun at sunset
- N° 05The mudbrick ecolodges of the lake shore
Fayoum, seen closer.

The calendar, honestly.
Peak months are what most guidebooks recommend. Shoulder months are our favourites — warmer light, thinner crowds, and better rates. Warm months are possible but demand a slower pace.
Three moments we might build for you.
The valley of the whales
A morning in Wadi El Hitan with a palaeontologist — 40-million-year-old whale skeletons in the middle of the Sahara.
The potters of Tunis
An afternoon in the studios of Tunis village, throwing (or watching, over tea) with a master potter.
Lake at dusk
Sunset drinks on the shore of Lake Qarun, and dinner in a lakeside lodge.
The quiet details.
- How long
- One night is enough for the highlights; two nights lets you actually rest.
- Vehicles
- The wadis are best approached by 4x4; that service can be requested and arranged subject to supplier availability and operating conditions.
- Water
- The lake is saline. Bring nothing you would swim in.
